Cryptomator's only task is encryption. The application does not connect to a cloud storage service directly (only applicable to Cryptomator for Desktop). If you would like to use Cryptomator to encrypt your cloud storage, you either have to install a sync tool (e.g., Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) or mount the server as a network share.


This is a quick guide on how to create and unlock a Cryptomator vault:

  1. Download, install, and open Cryptomator.
  2. Create a new vault by clicking the "+" button at the bottom left.
  3. Set the target location inside either the local sync folder (provided by the sync tool) or network share and give your vault a name.
  4. Assign a password to your vault and confirm it.
  5. Unlock your vault, which opens up a virtual drive, in which you can store your data.


We'd like to point out steps 3 and 5. The target location from step 3 only contains encrypted data. To work on your unencrypted data, you'd have to follow step 5 and that's what the virtual drive is for. You should only interact with the virtual drive and don't put unencrypted data in the target location from step 3. Of course, you can look inside the target location (i.e. the vault) to ensure that everything inside is indeed encrypted (by checking if the filenames are encrypted).

Wie richte ich Cryptomator ein?

Cryptomator is allein für die Verschlüsselung verantwortlich. Die Anwendung verbindet sich nicht direkt mit einem Cloud-Speicherdienst (trifft nur auf Cryptomator für Desktop zu). Falls Sie Cryptomator nutzen möchten, um Ihren Cloudspeicher zu verschlüsseln, müssen Sie entweder einen Synchronisationsclient installieren (z.B. Dies ist eine Kurzanleitung zur Erstellung und Entsperrung eines Cryptomator-Tresors:

  1. Cryptomator herunterladen, installieren und öffnen.
  2. Neuen Tresor erstellen, indem Sie unten links auf den "+"-Button klicken.
  3. Zielverzeichnis auswählen, entweder innerhalb des lokalen Sync-Ordners (bereitgestellt durch den Synchronisationsclient) oder des Netzwerkshares, und Namen für den Tresor vergeben.
  4. Passwort zum Tresor zuweisen und bestätigen.
  5. Tresor entsperren, woraufhin ein virtuelles Laufwerk geöffnet wird, in dem Sie Ihre Daten speichern können.


Insbesondere möchten wir auf die Punkte von Schritt 3 und 5 eingehen. Das Zielverzeichnis in Schritt 3 beinhaltet ausschließlich verschlüsselte Dateien. D.h. wenn Sie mit den unverschlüsselten Dateien arbeiten möchten, müssen Sie Schritt 5 befolgen, denn dafür ist das virtuelle Laufwerk da. Sie sollten daher nur mit dem virtuellen Laufwerk interagieren und keine unverschlüsselten Daten in das Zielverzeichnis aus Schritt 3 legen. Sie können selbstverständlich in den Speicherort (d.h. in den Tresor) hineinschauen, ob der Inhalt wirklich nur verschlüsselte Dateien enthält (erkennbar an den verschlüsselten Dateinamen).
